This dissertation consists of three essays, each of which explores a different factor influencing Asian Americans' voting behavior. The reason for studying Asian Americans' voting behavior stems from the fact that, unlike many other immigrant groups who have come to the United States, Asian Americans as a whole exhibit persistently low levels of voter turnout across generations. The social assimilation process and the strategies that have been shown to mobilize voters from other immigrant groups seem not to function in quite the same way for Asian Americans. To understand Asian Americans' voting behavior, this dissertation focuses on three aspects that can affect people's voting behavior, including outreach from politicians, social connections, and parenting styles. The first approach--outreach from politicians--captures the mobilizing influence of candidates for higher office. The second approach explores the influence of social connections on political participation and aims to understand whether Asian Americans may be mobilized by their social networks. The third approach focuses on the influence of Asian parents' political attitudes and parenting behavior, which may affect their children's orientation toward political participation since childhood regardless of what social connections and information they may develop in adulthood.
