Research indicates that many of the child sexual abuse prevention programs in the U.S. are aimed at teaching children self-protection. This creates a disproportionate burden on children to protect themselves rather than placing the responsibility more appropriately on the adults in the child's life. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore effective child sexual abuse prevention strategies from the experiences and perspectives of licensed therapists who work with child sexual abuse victims or offenders and to explore what they found to be the most widely used sexual grooming strategies. The demographic sample was recruited within the southwest region of South Texas using purposive sampling. The sample included five licensed sex offender treatment providers and five licensed professional counselors. The primary data collection method was semi-structured interviews using Zoom. The data were hand-coded and organized according to the research questions. Analysis and interpretation of findings were organized by way of six analytic categories influenced by the study's conceptual frameworks. This research revealed that child sexual abuse is preventable but not through the widely believed community effort. Child sexual abuse is an intimate crime and requires a person-to-person intervention to protect children. Recommendations encourage adults to participate in evidence-influenced public education that emphasizes how adults can become responsible capable guardians in the prevention of child sexual abuse. The practical implication for practice is that these findings give insight into how to interrupt the grooming process, thereby removing the burden of self-protection from the child and lowering the risk of that child becoming a victim.
