This report presents an in-depth analysis of the macroeconomic environment of renewable energies in the context of a company valuation of Encavis, one of the largest independent power producers in Europe. Given the ambitious climate goals of the European Union and its strong efforts to become independent of Russian energy imports, the expansion of renewables, particularly solar and wind, is found to be critical. Based on an LCOE model, solar and wind are expected to remain the most cost-competitive energy sources while thermal energies are predicted to become increasingly more expensive. As FiTs are likely to phase out, power producers are expected to rely more on the merchant market. PPAs are currently emerging due to rising corporate demand for green energy providing power producers with a new form of subsidy-free long-term contracts. Following the macroeconomic outlook, Encavis' business model and historical financial data were analysed. We find that Encavis' business model is geared towards the reduction of operational risks. Based on its track record of growing its power production portfolio profitably and its strong balance sheet, we conclude that Encavis is well-set to implement its growth strategy.
