This dissertation reconsiders the aesthetics and reception of Milton Babbitt by analyzing three compositions from the late 1980s that challenge the tenets of formal absolutism. Glosses, The Virginal Book, and Whirled Series each alludes to some cultural artifact beyond its formal structure: Judaic tradition, Renaissance music, and baseball, respectively. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective that embraces literary theory, philosophy, cultural history, and biography, I analyze referential play in Babbitt's music and discourse in order to illuminate both the polysemic power of Babbitt's compositional language and the political and cultural colorings that Babbitt's associations imply. I argue that because these words insinuate cultural phenomena beyond their formal structures, they upend prevailing adjudications of Babbitt's music as well as offer new points of entry for understanding meaning in serial music.
