In the lead-up to and aftermath of the 1959 Cuban Revolution, many Cubans fled to the United States, facing significant challenges related to political oppression, forced separation, and cultural adaptation. The present study is the first to examine intergenerational trauma and resilience within the Cuban American community, focusing on interviews conducted across three generations. The research explored how trauma and resilience are inherited and transformed over generations within Cuban American families. Through a narrative research approach, this study revealed that first generation Cuban Americans emphasized survival and adaptation, while the second generation explored emotional and psychological impacts, and the third generation focused on preserving cultural heritage and healing from inherited trauma. The findings introduced the new theory of generational narratives, which are the generationally shared and specific narratives that shape the perspectives and values of a given generation within a family and community, and the concept of hope as a new lens through which to understand resilience. The study underscored the need for culturally responsive and embedded research methods to understand intergenerational trauma and resilience, offering new insights into how Cuban American families navigate their complex legacies. By understanding the unique experiences of these families, this research contributes to a deeper knowledge of intergenerational trauma and resilience, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage while fostering healing and empowerment for future generations.
