Research has shown that music therapy has potential therapeutic benefits for people suffering from substance use and addiction. Music therapy is an evidence-based intervention used to help clients accomplish individualized goals when they seek therapy for their substance use and addiction. Research has also shown that substance abuse is a growing and harmful disease plaguing many individuals in the United States. This generic qualitative research study explored the therapists' perspectives on the efficacy of using music therapy on adults with substance use and addiction. The effects of music therapy for substance addiction are significant to the behavioral health field as it helps to ease stress, reduce anxiety, allow individuals to relax, increase focus on recovery, alter behaviors, help individuals who have difficulties adjusting to the pressures of recovery from substance use and addiction, and change one's emotional mindset. Semi-structured interviews were used in this research study, which incorporated 20 licensed therapists who provided therapeutic care to clients who are adults with substance use and addiction. After analyzing the data, three themes emerged:• The behavioral and emotional effects of music therapy• The assessment of life and life choices• The importance of having a therapeutic relationshipThe results detailed the therapists' perspectives for each theme as they witnessed how their clients responded to the music played in session. The results show how music therapy is a powerful intervention in helping people with substance addiction.
