Augustine believes that hope is a virtue central to the Christian journey. Rooted in God's mercy and directed toward the eschatological promise of salvation, his theology of hope intertwines with faith and charity, transforming despair into resilience and aligning the human heart with a longing for divine union. However, some contemporary views challenge this traditional view, arguing that hope, when overly future-oriented, risks becoming an "enchantment" that obscures present realities and an "anesthesia" that numbs believers to the complexities of human suffering. This thesis examines Augustine's insights on hope, particularly as articulated in his Enchiridion, in light of contemporary theological and existential challenges. It contrasts Augustine's vision with modern tendencies to equate hope with optimism or escapism, highlighting the enduring relevance of his reflections for navigating the complexities of faith in a secular age. By analyzing Augustine's personal experiences, pastoral teachings, and theological writings, this thesis explores how his model of hope-both deeply personal and profoundly communal-sustains believers and offers guidance for modern Christian life. This thesis seeks to answer Augustine's question in the Enchiridion: "What we should hope for.".
