Recapitulation in Irenaeus has always been a fruitful and fascinating topic. Recently, Thomas Holsinger-Friesen has argued that scholars have contributed to "recapitulation inflation," in which recapitulation grows in complexity without apparent limit. While showing the weaknesses in his approach, this study responds by showing that recapitulation is a complex literary-theological framework that incorporates elements of theoretical physics and mysticism. The Introduction provides historical background on Irenaeus, a thorough literature review of recapitulation, evidence of Irenaeus's rhetorical ability, and puts forth the thesis. Chapter 1 presents the historical-critical method as it is used in Catholic thought. In contrast, it presents Richard Bauckham's Jesus and the Eyewitnesses as a work that bypasses the historical-critical method altogether without sacrificing rigor in scholarship. It argues that Irenaeus would be more in agreement with the latter. Chapter 2 treats the false multidimensionality of Gnosticism as a foil to Irenaeus's true, multifaceted understanding of recapitulation. It discusses the Pleroma, plot and arrangement, and Hellenistic identity. Chapter 3 discusses Irenaeus's view of God the Father, the telos of recapitulation. Topics discussed are divine simplicity and God's attributes. This chapter introduces theoretical physics as a way to understand creation as music as well as the red-shift in galaxies as reflecting God's immeasurability. Chapter 4 treats the Incarnation. It discusses prophecies and theophanies. It then puts forth the view of the Incarnation as a theological singularity, bringing in themes of light, density, and brightness. Chapter 5 deals with recapitulation and Christology. It treats the relationship between the Father and the Son, restoration of friendship with God, and revelation. It also treats select miracles, such as Christ's healing of the man born blind. Chapter 6 covers recapitulation and spirituality. It discusses models of spirituality, friendship, spiritual disposition, death and glory, and exchange of attributes. Chapter 7 represents the culmination of recapitulation in terms of glory and new creation. It argues for understanding new creation in terms of a grounded mysticism in which bodily resurrection and a new earth are affirmed, yet imagination and analysis yield deeper meanings. The conclusion of this study is that the complexity of recapitulation is inherent to Irenaeus and not simply something scholars project onto him. This study points the way forward and can function as a base or framework upon which other scholars can build to usher in a new era in the study of Irenaeus.
