This study utilized the integrative literature review method to synthesize historic and contemporary relational psychoanalytic theory with both original and recent literature on the somatic intervention of Rolf Structural Integration. Additional publications were included on language theory, embodied psychoanalysis, and the mind-body relationship. This research looked at how and why psychoanalytic and somatic methods of therapy are similar and different in both approach and outcome, and what might be accomplished if practitioners of each modality were to utilize the knowledge gaps produced by the synthesis to inform their approach, to discuss the process and therapeutic potential, and to educate their patients. Might synthesizing the literature help bridge the gap between the psychological and manual therapies, by creating a psycho-somatic conjunction that helps describe what transpires (and what doesn't transpire) in our patients more holistically, and across technical approaches? The results of this synthesis shine light on the depth and richness of each modality, and how each approach helps a person access and understand unformulated experiences. However, utilizing the relationship within the therapy, as well as acknowledging and working with the transference, is something not currently employed by most Rolfers. This is an enduring difference between modalities. There is potential for Rolf Structural Integration, like other forms of somatic and sensorial work, to become more relational, and for the value of the here-and-now experience of the relationship to be acknowledged and employed, especially when considering a patient's metabolization and integration of the work. Moreover, contemporary analysis seems eager to work more within the here and now matrix of the body, and for practitioners to become skilled at utilizing their own sensorial and somatic data to guide the work and inform the process. Relational psychoanalysis might benefit from gleaning this kind of embodied presence from Rolf work, especially as therapists and patients evolve in tandem with technology.
