Attempts to define the features and predictive elements of well-being have resulted in debates that have lasted centuries. To help provide clarification, this study assessed the relative strength of hedonia and eudaimonia, two conceptually distinct well-being constructs, in predicting life satisfaction, an overall marker of well-being. A total of 118 participants completed an online survey, and the results of multiple regression analyses indicated that eudaimonia was a much stronger predictor of life satisfaction than hedonia, though hedonia was still important. However, contrary to predictions, the results failed to support the role of eudaimonia as a protective factor for life satisfaction in conditions of low hedonia. The results of this study underscored the complexities of well-being research since hedonia and eudaimonia were both found to be important predictors of life satisfaction. However, by comparing their relative strength, this study provided additional clarity by highlighting some of the unique features, such as optimal needs satisfaction, values-consistent action, and personal development, that might help explain the primacy of eudaimonia in predicting life satisfaction.
