The purpose of this quantitative, correlational-predictive study was to explore if and to what extent technical instruction, encouragement, reinforcement, and modeling as athlete-perceived parental behaviors predicted the task and ego goal orientation of Division I female soccer players participating in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) throughout the United States. The sample of female Division I soccer players (N = 106) represented a population currently playing at a high level with a direct link to the highest levels of performance in the sport. Two research questions, each with four hypotheses, guided this study to determine if technical instruction, encouragement, reinforcement, and modeling as athlete-perceived parental behaviors had a predictive relationship with the athlete's scores for task and ego goal orientation. The research questions were analyzed through two multiple linear regression analyses and produced two models. The model for task goal orientation was significant (F (8,97) = 4.95, p < .001, R2 = .29), with reinforcement (B = .24, p = .046) being the only parental behavior having a significant positive relationship. The model for ego goal orientation was not significant (F (8,97) = 1.67, p = .117, R2 = .12), with no specific parental behavior having a significant relationship. Findings support the use of positive reinforcement of task-involving behaviors as a predictor of task goal orientation. These findings contributed to the literature on a previously underrepresented population while connecting parental behaviors and psychological outcomes.
