Aphantasia is the inability to intentionally generate and manipulate mental imagery without stimuli. It is a phenomenon with growing interest within the psychological community; however, despite abnormal mental imagery utilization being a key feature in many psychopathological diagnoses, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there has been little research into the relationship between aphantasia and PTSD. I examined the relationship between aphantasia and PTSD. A Mann-Whitney U Test determined there was no significant difference in the distribution of the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (Marks, 1973 [VVIQ]) scores across participants with or without PTSD (U=2409, p >.340), indicating that those with aphantasia are just as likely to be diagnosed with PTSD as those without aphantasia. The novel survey also provided additional information showing that most participants with combined aphantasia and PTSD were provided interventions requiring the use of intentional mental imagery (n=43, 79%), and most of these participants found the intervention to be ineffective (n=28, 60.9%). Clinical implications and suggestions for inclusivity are also discussed.
