Media coverage of adaptive sports events is limited in comparison to traditional athletic events. Adaptive sports are sporting events where traditional sports are modified to allow individuals with a disability to participate. The problem to be addressed by this study was adaptive sports athletes are often misrepresented in mass media, which may influence adaptive sporting event participation. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how adaptive sports athletes and adaptive sport event organizers perceive the influence of media on adaptive sports participation in the United States. Media effects theory was the conceptual framework that undergird the study. A qualitative method and case study research design were used to collect and triangulate data from 20 respondents to a questionnaire and 10 semi-structured interviews. Data was analyzed using a six-step thematic analysis process. Two themes and one subtheme emerged for RQ1 relative to how adaptive sports athletes perceive the influence of media on adaptive sports participation. Four emerged themes emerged for RQ2 relative to how adaptive sports coordinators perceive the influence of media on adaptive sports participation. Four unexpected themes relative to both research questions as emerged. Results overall revealed media does influence adaptive sports participation. Adaptive sports organizations should develop working relationships with local media, 2) post short video clips on social media sites, 3) continue creating flyers/brochures to advertise events, 4) offer inclusive events, and 5) educate physical and occupational therapists in order to recruit participants. Recommendations for future research include conducting a study on media outlet's perception of adaptive athletes and adaptive sports and a qualitative study using focus groups to gain further knowledge about public opinion regarding adaptive sports using social media and traditional media stories.
