The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to explore how college athletes describe norms and expectations communicated through social media comments influencing their self-presentation on social media within the Southwestern United States. This qualitative descriptive research study was constructed on the social capital theory norms and expectations as the theoretical foundation. Two research questions were established to assist the exploration of this study: (1) How do college athletes describe norms communicated through social media comments influencing their self-presentation, and (2) How do college athletes describe expectations communicated through social media comments influencing their self-presentation. This study sample included 41 collegiate student-athlete participants through the use of online questionnaire or audio interviews. Four themes emerged from the findings applying Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-step thematic analysis. The first two themes for the research question (1) included concern for name, image, likeness influence and social media mindfulness avoiding online conflict. The second two themes for research question (2) included my actions have disrupting consequences and my online exposure has significant influence. The results from this study revealed understandings of student-athletes' self-presentation strategies and significance of social media educational training. One future implication to explore is NIL training effectiveness with high school or college student-athletes.
