The purpose of this dissertation study was to conduct an empirical analysis of social workers' perspectives and experiences concerning supervision, utilizing a cross-sectional survey targeted to an audience of post-graduate social workers receiving supervision in the United States. An original survey was developed and adapted from Kadushin (1974, 1992) and Munson's (1981)survey publications and applies Shulman's (2020) practice theory of interactional supervision as a conceptual base. The survey was distributed to 4,140 members of national member organizations and one academic institution (3,205 NASW, 85 Smith College, and 850AAPCSW). Total participant response included 159, with 97 participants identified as viable data responses. Respondents included diversity in gender, age, race and geographical location. Findings support similar outcomes identified in the literature and historical surveys and also highlighted an important evolution of practice demands and supervisory challenges in response to changing variables in the current social work landscape. Future practice and research recommendations are provided.
