Polyvagal Theory (PVT) in clinical settings. It addressed the main research question of how clinicians integrate theoretical constructs of PVT in clinical work. Sub-questions explored the reasons for hesitation, barriers to usage, and challenges encountered. This study involved interviewing 11 clinicians who have experience using PVT in their work with clients through open-ended, semi-structured questions. Thematic analysis identified six key themes: (1) Discovery of PVT as There Has Been A "Huge Gap" In Training, (2) Shifting Paradigms to Use of PVT That "Changes the Way They View Themselves," (3) Benefits of PVT as a "Shared Language," (4) Challenges and Critiques of PVT as "Overwhelming" and "Individualistic," (5) PVT in Clinical Practice and Therapist Use of "How Their Body Is Their Ally in Survival," (6) Personal Impact of PVT on Therapists, "How We Show Up". Three overarching dimensions emerged: Generational differences in PVT use, the individualistic nature of PVT and the need to decolonize, and variations in PVT application based on understanding and positionality. This study contributes to existing literature by highlighting the diverse ways therapists understand and apply PVT, emphasizing the importance of cultural competence and adaptation in therapeutic practices.
