Harriet Haswell Grosvenor was eleven years old in 1836 when she left her home in Utica (NY) to live with the family of her father's sister, Harriet Plimpton (Grosvenor) Ward, in Shrewsbury (MA). She and her younger brother, George, who joined her in Shrewsbury in 1839, returned to New York in August 1843. This sequence of events is not explicitly stated in the contents Ward Family Papers collection at the American Antiquarian Society; in fact, the Grosvenors' presence in Shrewsbury has gone unnoticed until now. All the evidence that the Grosvenor siblings were in Shrewsbury is derived from records of material consumption and material creation: Thomas W. Ward II's Cash Book for 1840-1852 and Farm Account Book for 1833-1860, Harriet Grosvenor Ward's Household Accounts for 1840-1866, and meeting records left by Harriet H. Grosvenor and fellow members of the Girls' Antislavery Society of Shrewsbury (1837-1840). This thesis examines the account book entries for the Grosvenor children sources closely, contextualizes them, and attempts to reconstruct the material experiences of Harriet and George Grosvenor between 1836 and 1843 using the principles of microhistory. This process enables me to gain insight into the interpersonal relationships of the Grosvenors, their father, and their aunt through the records' resulting implications, as well as demonstrating the material developmental needs that children growing up in the second quarter of the 19th century needed in the material transition to middle class adolescents.
