Over the last decade, counseling literature has focused attention on integrative nutrition and its impact on mental health and trauma. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding how therapists experience integrative nutrition in their treatment protocols with clients. This study used Husserl's descriptive phenomenological approach to spotlight the lived experience of trauma therapists and integrative nutrition in the treatment process. The primary data collection was from nine semi-structured interviews with licensed trauma therapists throughout the United States. The research resulted in three major themes: value of integrative nutrition, barriers to integrative nutrition, and essentials for integrative nutrition. The narratives of the participants revealed that even though trauma therapists have a desire to operate from a holistic and integrative perspective, there is a lack of formal education and training on the subject. Additionally, despite having personal experience and positive outcomes with integrative nutrition, trauma therapists remain unsure about their confidence and scope of practice. This study confirmed that even though the existing literature recommends nutritional modifications in the treatment of trauma, counselors remain uncertain about their role in integrating nutrition into the treatment process. Recommendations for future consideration and practice are discussed in Chapter 5, concluding that integrative nutrition should be incorporated into counselor education programs so that trauma therapists feel more confident to incorporate it into their treatment protocol.
