The purpose of this study was to expand the literature on the impact of spiritual experiences for women in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), who were formerly incarcerated. This study utilized a phenomenological approach to explore and understand the lived experiences of the phenomenon of spirituality and its role in the recovery from alcohol and/or substances. The semi-structured interview was completed by seven female participants who completed the 12 Steps of AA. The analysis revealed four categories and eleven themes. The four categories included spirituality/religion, incarceration experience, AA community, and self-development/personal growth. Participants revealed positive and negative experiences with spirituality/religion as well as a change in outlook toward the concept of a Higher Power/God. Participants also reported the impact of incarceration on their recovery from alcohol/substances, the role of sponsorship in their lives, and their degree of involvement in AA. Additionally, participants revealed internal shifts in their cognition and emotions as a result of completing the 12 Steps of AA. This study may help clinicians better understand the complexity and depth of factors which contribute to the recovery of women in this population.
