An invisible disability is a physical or mental condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities and cannot be outwardly identified, such as a chronic illness that can cause pain or fatigue (Davis, 2005; IDA, 2020). Many people with invisible disabilities report reduced well-being (Corrigan et al., 2006; Manderson & Kokanovic, 2009; Picariello et al., 2018). The present study aimed to investigate potential factors that can increase well-being for people with invisible disabilities. The study consisted of 180 participants with invisible disabilities recruited through social media platforms and forums specific to different invisible disabilities, and through the Student Access Services office at a local university. Results found significant positive relationships between well-being and the following constructs: acceptance of disability, self-compassion, self-determination, and self-advocacy. Additionally, results indicate that self-advocacy moderates the relationship between self-determination and well-being, such that when self-advocacy is high, self-determination will also be high and will be associated with higher levels of well-being. These results can best inform people with invisible disabilities and their associated clinicians, educators, and allies for what interventions are available and effective in promoting well-being.
