This study's purpose was to explore relationships among perceived social support, perceived religious support, and the mental and spiritual health of U.S. adult Christian spiritual abuse survivors. Participants (N = 228) completed the Spiritual Abuse Questionnaire, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Multi-Faith Religious Support Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, Mental Health Continuum-Short Form, Religious and Spiritual Struggles Scale-14, and FACIT-Sp Non-Illness Version. Data was analyzed using correlational and moderation analyses. Perceived social support was related to higher spiritual and psychological well-being (r = .46 and .48, respectively), as well as to higher spiritual and psychological distress (i.e., R/S struggle, depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress; rs = .24 to .30; all ps < .001). Similarly, perceived religious support was related to higher spiritual and psychological well-being (rs = .62 and .66, respectively; both ps < .001). However, it was unrelated to spiritual and psychological distress. Perceived social support was associated with weaker relationships between spiritual abuse severity and all outcomes except spiritual well-being. Perceived religious support moderated the relationships between spiritual abuse severity and spiritual and psychological well-being, but it did not moderate any other relationships. Social and religious support is associated with greater psychological health in Christian spiritual abuse survivors. Results suggest the importance of equipping communities to respond to negative outcomes. Implications for clinical practice and religious ministry are discussed.
