According to attachment theory, the attachment system becomes activated under stress. Dementia caregiving is a naturally occurring, stressful situation. The current study investigates the role of attachment and the quality of the relationship (RQ) between family caregivers and their relative with dementia in terms of several caregiver outcomes. The current study also examines the link between attachment, RQ, and daily affect and stress. Data collection included completion of an online survey during a meeting with the researcher. A 14-day daily diary assessment included surveys related to caregiver's daily affect and stress. Analyses included correlation and regression analyses and multilevel models. Results showed that attachment anxiety was related to lower pre-dementia RQ and higher burden, and current negative RQ was related to higher burden. Attachment anxiety was also related to daily affect and stress, specifically higher negative affect and higher perceived stress. Attachment avoidance showed up in daily diary results in relation to higher negative affect across 14 days. Higher burden was associated with higher negative affect, lower positive affect, and higher perceived stress across 14 days. Current negative RQ was related to burden, as well as higher perceived stress whereas current positive RQ was related to lower perceived stress across 14 days. These results show that attachment anxiety and current negative RQ are important in family dementia caregivers' sense of being overburdened with caregiving tasks. An additional insight into caregivers' daily life was that attachment anxiety appears to influence daily experiences through daily negative affect and stress. Burden was found to be a relevant variable in daily experiences as well, emphasizing its importance in caregiver research. Contrary to expectations, pre-dementia RQ did not show up as protective against negative outcomes in the current data.
