Threat assessment is a multi-disciplinary approach to gathering information, providing intervention, and monitoring individuals who pose a threat to others. The purpose of this study was to determine if current mental health providers working with school-age children can correctly identify warning behaviors, as well as understand threat reporting and information sharing in accordance with their legal and ethical duties to support threat assessments conducted in schools or through law enforcement. This study used a mixed-model and mixed-method design in order to conduct survey research. The goal of this study was to determine if therapists need further training to correctly identify warning behaviors for mass violence and appropriately share information for a threat assessment to be conducted. The results of this study indicate that therapists are able to identify violence warning behaviors, as well as other risk factors, and can complete their duty to protect requirements, but they believe they are limited by confidentiality and are hesitant to share information with a client's school.
