In the United States there is a growing number of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) entering into adulthood. Adults with ASD often lack the social skills required to cultivate and maintain more complex social relationships specifically in the context of romantic relationships. Studies have shown that despite the lack of success with more traditional face-to-face courtships many adults with ASD communicate a strong desire for romantic relationships and marriage (Strunz et al., 2017). The lack of success through traditional courtship may lead to the use of other modalities, such as online dating sites and apps. Online dating sites and apps may be remarkably auspicious for adults with ASD. However, there are a number of potential risk factors involved with this modern form of courtship. Adults with autism are at high risk for victimization and predatory behaviors by potential romantic partners. Presently there are no peer reviewed journal articles addressing the matter of how to successfully identify potential dangerous/predatory behaviors of prospective romantic partners while communicating through online dating sites and apps. One potential method that may prove to be successful at remediating the potential risk factors of online dating is use of video modeling. Video modeling has proven to be both effective and versatile for individuals with ASD over the past 30 years at altering a multitude of behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of video modeling to facilitate the identification of risk factors when using online dating sites and/or apps. Keywords: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Adults, Romantic relationships, Online dating, Victimization, Dangerous scenarios, Video modeling.
