Some teachers believe online platforms are just a substitute for traditional teaching methodologies. Still, some teachers are looking for novel methods to use the platform in such a way that it encourages the students by improving their engagement in studies reflected in their academic performances. The online learning experience for the students in the initial days could have been more satisfactory (Ismaili, Y., 2021). It was because of reasons like technological constraints and older teaching methods. However, the recent pandemic has proved to be a golden opportunity to introduce the online mode of education. Online education has gained importance, especially during COVID-19, as it provides more flexibility, the opportunity to study and learn at their pace, encourages self-directed study, and the comfort of getting an education from the same teachers who used to teach them with traditional methods. Education through online methods has become popular, but could it compete with the quality of conventional teaching methods? There is no doubt that though some significant differences exist between online and offline teaching, both modes could provide a high-quality learning experience to students. Offline methods involving direct interaction between students and teachers have been a common and standard teaching method for ages. Online education has become popular, but others still consider traditional methods the best option. The research problem of this thesis investigates - The effect of online education on students' attendance and academics in India. A review of the research findings of more than 100 publications was done in the literature, most of which got published between 2009 and 2022. The main research objective of this thesis involves explaining how different aspects of online education impact students' engagement during online classes and, after that, their performance in the assessments. The research outcomes identified through the literature review serve as a measure of how online education has impacted and affected the education system during the pandemic. Coincidently, the study period coincided with the outbreak of the pandemic, wherein the traditional education system shifted towards an online education system. A study to investigate the effects of e-learning on students' attendance and academics took place. The study used a non-experimental, qualitative, and quantitative approach. The first part of the study involved distributing a 17-question, five-point Likert scale questionnaire to 483 students from 10 different schools through an online survey. The second part involved distributing a 26-question questionnaire to the heads of institutions to assess how the shift to online education had impacted students' attendance. Finally, the development of a conceptual model to illustrate the impact of attendance and academic scores happened. For data analysis and model testing, we utilized ADANCO 2.3.1 software for structural equation modeling. Among the three hypotheses generated for explaining the various direct relationships, all of them are significant. The responses indicate that students happily attended online classes and preferred watching recorded videos offline. They showed satisfaction with the online session but needed clarification when asked to choose between offline and online modes, which is visible by the 25% of students who could not agree or disagree with the statement. The effectiveness of the online system was because of the interaction of teachers and resources provided by the school. Students gave mixed responses to the questions when asked to compare the online and offline modes of education, as this shift was forced on them during the pandemic without any preconditioning. However, an urge to attend an offline class could have influenced their response to choose among the two as there was a restriction in moving out of their houses. Most schools where the survey took place have provided the teachers with extensive training to make the shift to online classes smooth and effective. In almost 80% of the schools, the teachers transacted the content, which had impacted the students' attendance and engagement positively during the online classes. All schools said that online learning positively affects students learning through better syllabus coverage through tools and technology and also in the greater understanding for students through creative teaching methods. In addition, 50% of the schools agreed that the students' academic scores were improved during the online exam, while 30% of schools were neutral. The validity of all the measurable results is examined in this thesis utilizing pertinent theories, significantly advancing their fundamental perspectives. This thesis could also contribute to the academic literature and education system in online education development, especially in India, and aims to contribute to the academic by presenting findings from the literature review as a research paper at international conferences.
