Las Cruces, New Mexico' Mesquite neighborhood provides a window into the complexities of understanding place. As part of the borderlands, as an Indigenous homeland, and as a historic district, this neighborhood presents overlapping, and at times contradictory, narratives. Introducing the neighborhood through multiple narratives introduces the idea of place as an assemblage and encounter and potentially destabilizes the hegemony of dominant narratives. The question of whether the Mesquite neighborhood is gentrifying is explored as well as the neighborhood's relevance in relation to the city-wide, Elevate Las Cruces, plan. This "place-based" plan adopted in 2020 deems the Mesquite neighborhood significant for multiple reasons. Citizen participation was a part of this planning process but involved a limited dialogue. This thesis seeks to understand residents' experience living in the neighborhood and how their perceptions intersect with city plans and gentrification.Zines, understood as "minor literature," provide an alternative discourse to these official urban plans. A New Zine Atlas of Las Cruces was created collaboratively over the course of three public zine workshops that engaged people in creative exercises that explored people's sense of place in the Mesquite neighborhood and Las Cruces. Zines are theorized as "third space" in relation to the Mesquite neighborhood, and as a feminist geographic method for studying such a place. This work is situated within the history and current preoccupations of the geohumanities. As the field moves away from the parameters of the Anthropocene, new ways of theorizing place emerge. Place as an assemblage as well as feminist critiques of assemblage geographies, are explored. Place as an encounter is theorized through the work of the Situationist derive. A platica with three neighborhood residents is presented and analyzed to further make sense of life in the Mesquite neighborhood. This platica highlights how residents experience the neighborhood via familial memories and ancestral ties. It also provides insights into the "failed" gentrification of the neighborhood. As Las Cruces continues to develop, this public geohumanities project offers insight into sense of place in the city's original townsite. The zine project offers new ways of applying the geohumanities and highlights the need for greater levels of public participation in urban planning in Las Cruces moving forward.
