The proposal of this project is to discuss, engage and improve on interior architecture as it relates to craft and technology. Through investigation of seminal texts such as John Ruskin's The Seven Lamps of Architecture and the concepts of the "Bauhaus Manifesto", a return to craft and creativity will be explored. Such an analysis is needed to discuss the connection of a building's envelope and structure, i.e. its form and fabrication, as it relates to occupiable and inhabitable interior space as technology advances.Past making processes and traditions that have been passed down generationally, mastered over time spent making and fine tuning craft, are in jeopardy of becoming lost and forgotten due to technological advancements and more 'efficient' means of production. The discussion between craft and ornament is an ongoing discussion as it pertains to constructed space and those who have participated in such fabrication processes. The surrounding environment is a reflection of culture and acts as a means of communication to inhabitants.1 Ornament stands to serve this purpose of communication in a way that can be easily understood by many. The process of making is embodied through both the hands and the mind before passing into matter.2 Craft and attention to materiality as it pertains to space play a larger role in the way space and such cultural messages are received. The site proposed to house and test this thesis proposition is an industrial style building that was a part of the previous Eberhard-Faber Pencil Factory in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Since this site is rather rich in history, the intention is to highlight and showcase the narrative of its origins and impact within the local and global community. The proposed program is for the site to be converted into a 21st century digital library. Strategies of celebration of site history and highlighting construction methods through contemporary techniques via architecture parlante, as well as interior detailing as a means of communication to engage with users in the space, are proposed. Through re-use of a historic site and implementation of moments of craft, the design is able to speak through the space from the past into the present.
