This thesis focuses on the significance of the gingerbread houses of Port of Spain to the heritage of the Trinidadian people, and the preservation tactics which can be employed to protect them. It examines the history, craftsmanship, and heritage of this late 19th-century prefabricated timber building, as the home of the middle and working classes. Within these homes are the personal stories, achievements, and lives of everyday Trinidadians, national icons, and those who shaped today's country. Due to ineffective existing policy, the Gingerbread House has been subject to multiple demolitions and neglect citywide, and the landscape has become overrun by new, concrete commercial structures. An exploration of international policy implementation, in collaboration with local grassroots preservation efforts, has concluded that many avenues can be taken to protect the Gingerbread House and the social histories of Port of Spain's people. These preservation initiatives can also create robust opportunities for employment, community and infrastructural development, heritage tourism, media campaigns, education programs, and many more. The gingerbread house, as the home of the Trinidadian people, is of extraordinary local and international significance and deserves to be preserved.
