This thesis focuses specifically on Off-Off-Broadway theaters that are essential to New York City's artistic landscape. Off-Off-Broadway theater refers to small theater organizations in NYC that operate independently. They are also defined as fewer than 99 seats. As Nasrullah Mambrol mentioned in his Off-Off-Broadway article in Literary Theory and Criticism, "[if] Broadway theater is about commercial runs and Off-Broadway is about new voices and revivals, then Off-Off-Broadway is about avant-garde, experimental and non-traditional approach to the performance" However, these theaters face numerous preservation challenges due to their unconventional nature and often limited financial resources. Therefore, this study explores the tangible and intangible preservation of Off-Off-Broadway theaters, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive preservation strategy that sustains this vibrant and culturally significant community. The primary objectives of this research are to define tangible and intangible heritage elements of Off-Off-Broadway theaters, evaluate their importance, and develop effective preservation strategies. The study begins by defining Off-Off-Broadway theaters with the historical evolution of the community by documenting the architectural and cultural significance of these theaters, highlighting their unique contributions to the artistic values of the community. It then identifies the preservation challenges faced by these theaters, comparing them to similar efforts in other regions. This study draws on a qualitative methodology, incorporating the documentation of theaters, archival records, interviews, and observations for data collection. Documentation of these theaters is intended to visually represent the architectural elements and identify the traditional materials of the structures. It also aims to understand the need for venues to develop strategies for adapting the spaces to contemporary demands. Archival records and research are used to understand the historical and cultural context of these theaters. Archival research serves as a foundational step to preserve the historical narratives of Off-Off-Broadway theaters for uncovering important legacies and ongoing challenges faced by the community. The study also presents three case studies: Cafe Cino, La MaMa Experimental Theatre, and Kraine Theatre, providing useful insights into the preservation potential of Off-Off-Broadway theaters. This allows for a more nuanced exploration of the selected theaters concerning their diverse historical backgrounds, architectural styles, and community contexts.Furthermore, the thesis proposes preservation strategies that balance the need to protect historical integrity with the practicalities of contemporary adaptation. This includes assessing funding models, ongoing maintenance plans, and the adaptability of theaters to future cultural and economic changes. The research provides an examination of the long-term viability of the preservation efforts for future generations to recognize their cultural heritage. This thesis offers four different considerations for the preservation recommendation of the Off-Off Broadway theaters, it also underscores the critical role these theaters play in fostering artistic innovations and cultural diversity. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors necessary to sustain the off-off-Broadway community, ensuring that it continues to thrive and contribute to the cultural fabric of New York City.
