A term one comes across within everyday life in the South Asian city is Jugaad. The term is loaded: it can come across as a compliment or disregard. The word translates to quick fix, hack or temporary solution depending on the context. Some Subaltern Urbanistic practices correlate Jugaad as 'the inherent make-do spirit of bricolage that characterizes the slum'. However, others suggest it is not just employed by the 'dispossessed' but instead it is a flexible strategy employed by different social classes (Ananya Roy, 2011).Karachi is a pastiche of urban and heritage policies, a rising population succumbing to rising water, crumbling heritage and a melting pot of languages, ethnicity and subcultures formed owing to its identity as a port. The city does not run like a well-oiled machine, but like a 'macgyvered' engine, salvaged from several moving parts. Many sensitive to the question of heritage have argued between two sides of the camp on Jugaad. One sees the many informal interventions taking place within old town neighborhoods as a blight to the glory of the past while others see these interventions as part of the city's negotiations with its complicated identity.I believe there is a potential to strike a balance between the two, a hybrid state that could be reached where elements of the past are preserved versus complete erasure. In this state there is space for Jugaad negotiations, thus allowing the potential to grapple with contested pasts through embodiment and intervention. My study began as an investigation of the ephemeral nature of the old town neighborhoods in Karachi city, held together by the Jugaads or interventions created by residents, hawkers, shopkeepers and merchants to facilitate everyday life. Both the old fabric and informal urbanisms (Jugaads) are now subject to erasure. These investigations may point towards a new approach to preservation, a form that moves away from the pristine and sees opportunity in places of loss and lack.
