The notice marked the end of his artistic career in British America, which started in 1749 when he arrived in New York from England. Wollaston is credited with introducing the rococo painting style to the colonies and developing colonial portraiture accordingly. His prolific output attests to his London training and clients' desire to emulate British tastes and ideals in their images. He took inspiration from magnificent royal portraits and prints circulating the Atlantic and reproduced their sartorial and iconographic visuals to adorn the bodies of elite colonial sitters. In doing so, Wollaston left behind a trail of visual evidence that identifies individuals and unearths their aesthetic knowledge, tastes, and power.
