Ambiguous in scale, materiality, and form, Catholic religious grottoes today are a strange but surprisingly common phenomenon in Western New York. These artificial caves built to enclose religious statues appear as both ancient and alien in the modern environment. Though they continue to function as devotional objects for some, they are regarded by others as roadside oddities or ignored entirely. Though architecture-adjacent, grottoes are rarely discussed in contemporary architectural discourse. The thesis takes the format of a guidebook that, through drawings, photographs, and commentary, takes the reader on a road trip through Western New York's unique collection of Roman Catholic religious grottoes. More than just a documentary effort, the thesis proposes a new understanding of the grotto typology, looking beyond their spiritual nature to recognize their broader cultural and architectural value as kitsch artifacts.
