America's education system does not meet the needs of 21st century students who live and will work in a Knowledge Age economy. Contextual forces outside the education system and channels of influence within the school system combine to inform the Industrial Age school system to modify its curriculum and teaching strategies. Ubiquitous technology and globalization have escalated the need for every student to learn new skills. Bronfenbrenner's Bio-ecological Theory of Human Development is the theoretical framework of this study. A modified framework of Investigating the Influence of Nationally Developed Standards for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education is the conceptual framework of this study. State lawmakers, education agencies, standards, school districts, and campuses contribute to student learning. These systems combine to ensure what students should know and be able to do. Teachers and teaching practices remain the most influential component of student learning. This explanatory sequential mixed methods study explored Texas high school teachers' facilitation of rural students' 21st century skills and knowledge. This study defines 21st century skills as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation, self-direction, making global connections, making local connections, and using technology as a learning tool. Rural teachers reported facilitating critical thinking and using technology as a tool for learning most often and making global connections and making local connections least often.
