This thesis addresses issues of abandonment and depopulation in small towns along Route 66 by investigating the feasibility and potential benefits of applying the Albergo Diffuso, an Italian community-based tourism model, to revitalize their economies and preserve their heritage. The Albergo Diffuso promotes the adaptive reuse of historic buildings as accommodations and community spaces, fostering sustainable tourism and preserving cultural heritage. Drawing upon a mixed-methods approach, including a literature review, precedent analysis, stakeholder interviews, site visits, and typology creation, the study examines the suitability of the Albergo Diffuso model for Route 66 communities, considering their unique characteristics and development patterns. The research explores the economic, social, cultural, and environmental implications of implementing the model along the historic route. Findings suggest that, while the direct translation of the Albergo Diffuso may face challenges due to the vastly differing contexts, adaptations can be made to leverage the model's principles and benefits. The thesis concludes with recommendations for an incremental implementation strategy, highlighting the importance of community engagement, partnerships, and sustainable tourism practices to foster the revitalization of Route 66 and create a more vibrant and inclusive destination.
