The residential interior design business model is undergoing fundamental change. Broad public access to online shopping platforms through commercial websites, cable TV, and across social media has changed consumer behavior patterns into an increasingly Do-It-Yourself approach. This has disrupted the traditional business model of residential interior design as a face-to-face service which has historically drawn upon a designer's knowledge in science and artistry to create concepts and solutions unique to a client's needs and goals. This research explores this structural change through historical research and analysis of the development of the traditional interior design business model, the different elements that separately and collectively have contributed to the evolution of this change over the last three decades, and how professional designers are being forced to adapt to the new business landscape. Practicing professional interior designers were surveyed to assess the nature and extent of the change in business that they have experienced, as well as how they have had to react to maintain a successful practice in the emerging field.Their responses have been analyzed statistically and qualitatively to understand the various aspects of the professional interior designers' business approach that has been affected and what measures have become necessary to undertake to remain competitive and successful in the evolving arena.Further questions that need to be explored include whether the next generation of aspiring interior designers are being adequately prepared academically and in their training assignments for the new realities of work in the industry.
