Both domestic and international strategic alliances formed among major airlines have received significant attention over the years. Codesharing agreements, which enable an airline to market flights operated by its partner airline, are often a crucial part of such strategic alliances. This thesis investigates the effects of codesharing among major airlines on the on-time performance of majors at their U.S. domestic flights. Using flight-level models with fixed-effects, we estimate whether an airline's higher codesharing level on a given leg affects delays and cancellations on the flights operated by that airline on that leg. We find some evidence that a higher codesharing level of an airline on a given leg leads to lower on-time performance of that airline on that leg on average. Furthermore, this thesis finds little to no evidence that the effects of codesharing on on-time performance vary with the changes in the market shares of a given operating airline.
