An examination of artistic approaches to painting and other artistic interpretations of the natural world. The author combines the knowledge and experiences of a career as a wildlife biologist and conservation educator with memory and imagination to create her artwork. The author's creative journey is described. Includes a short discussion about the history of European and North American landscape painting and an overview of contemporary landscape painting. Evidence of the importance of human connections to nature and environmental awareness are discussed. Historic landscape painters Vincent Van Gogh and Emily Carr and selected contemporary artists Charles Burchfield, Mark Laver, Per Kirkeby, Joan Mitchell and poet Mary Oliver are discussed in relation to the author's landscape paintings and sculptures. How are the selected contemporary artists interpreting nature for today's viewers? How is the author's work influenced by the selected artists? How do these artists' approaches compare and contrast with author's? What are the author's and the selected artist's intentions for their artwork's impact on the viewer? Has a desire to simply inspire the viewer evolved into an additional intent to increase environmental awareness and actions from viewing their art? A discussion of the author's interpretation of nature in response to the contemporary art world. Images and discussion of the author's thesis show and selected artwork.
