Colombia's Pacific coast region is one of the most biodiverse places in the world. The region lies within predominately Afro-Colombian State of Choco, bordering Panama to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The region is home to many endemic marine and plant species, warm coastal waters, complex river systems and pristine rainforests. Choco is also home to Los Katios National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which protects the fragile ecosystem from pollution, timber extraction, overfishing, agribusiness and cattle operations. The municipality of Bahia Solano is a tourist destination along Choco's coast with an abundance of natural resources, picturesque scenery and vibrant culture. Despite these characteristics, the municipality and region's tourism industry remains underdeveloped in comparison to other tourist destinations within the country. In addition, the poverty rate in Choco is one of the highest in the country. With its many tourist assets, the region has the potential to become a new model for sustainable tourism and burgeoning tourism destination in the region. However, to reach its full potential and address the complex challenges that face the region, tourism geographies must be utilized to provide the knowledge base and analytical framework needed to create a sustainable tourism development model for Bahia Solano and the region. A tourism geographies-based model would place high value on the region's pristine natural environment and provide revenue to support infrastructure projects, increase employment opportunities and support social programs. In addition, this model would be comprehensive, in that it addresses Colombia's complex history, politics, geography, socio-economics and cultural landscape. The application of tourism geographies and its principles can provide the necessary framework for the creation of a comprehensive and successful sustainable tourism development plan.
