Climate change, caused by an incessant rise in anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is an existential threat to mankind. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the dominant GHG and thus carbon separation/ capture is a key tool to mitigate climate change. The use of membranes for gas separation has attracted plenty of research attention over the past decades due to its ability to compete with traditional gas separation methods, like chemical absorption, adsorption and distillation, as a more practical, economical, and sustainable alternative. Highperformance thin-film composite (TFC) membrane, with an ultrathin defectfree outer selective layer and a strong porous substrate, has advanced membrane-based technologies with its impressive gas and vapor separation. However, many barriers remain before outer selective TFC membranes for gas separation are deemed practical and robust enough in meeting the harsh conditions present in new and emerging industrial applications. Chiefly, it is cost ineffective and labour intensive to fabricate large amount of outer selective layered TFC membranes for industrial adoption. This work details a novel and straightforward strategy to fabricate defect-free, inner selective TFC hollow fibre membranes. Firstly, the pore-forming agent, triethylene glycol (TEG), was added in varying concentrations to the dope fluid to study the pore size and thus optimize the performance of the polyethersulfone (PES) supporting substrate to achieve the highest possible CO2permeance.Next, highly crosslinked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating solution was directly pumped through the inner side of this porous and well-engineered PES supporting substrate to obtain a defect-free inner selective layer. Concentration of the PDMS coating solution was controlled to study the correlation between thickness of the inner layer coating and performance of the TFC membranes.Characterization of the substrates and TFC membranes were done using the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to observe the surface morphology and roughness of the inner layer, respectively. The optimal result is a defect-free PDMS/PES TFC hollow fibre membrane with an ultra-thin PDMS inner selective layer of ~230 nm, developed for capturing of CO2. It achieved CO2permeance of more than 2,100 GPU and CO2/N2selectivity of ~10, at 1 bar pressure. This ground-breaking defect-free inner selective layer may provide useful insights to the academia and industries to develop high-performance TFC hollow fibre membranes that are labour- and cost-effective for industry-scale CO2capture from flue gas.
