Amidst digital transformations, Enterprise Architecture (EA) is critical for aligning business and IT strategies. Previous research on EA frameworks and models has faced criticism for being complex, inconsistent, fragmented, and impractical. To address this, we adopt general systems theory to decipher EA holistically and guide EA modeling. Utilizing a 6-step method aligned with the design science research paradigm, we develop the Generic Enterprise Architecture (GEA) reference models, comprising Technology Architecture, Data Architecture, Application Architecture, and Business Architecture, with referrals to Security Architecture and Governance and Management. These novel models are adaptable to stakeholders' requirements and readiness levels and can be used standalone or in combinations. They are demonstrated in smart health district, AI-enabled digital twin system, smart building, and yacht chartering startup cases. This research provides reusable, adaptable, and scalable reference models with interrelationships that may serve diverse organizations including SMEs, fostering agility, sustainability, and a common EA ontology.
