Upconverting nanoparticles are notorious for their ability to absorb multiple photons and emit one with a shorter wavelength. Given that the human body is more transparent to infrared light, this property allows for enhanced image resolution and deeper tissue penetration, making these nanoparticles a promising tool for advancing biomedical sensing. This thesis explores their use in two distinct applications. First, their emission properties are modulated using Forster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), effectively demonstrated in pH sensing experiments. Second, their emission lifetimes are adjusted through the Purcell effect and plasmonic interactions, highlighting their potential in force measurements. Both methods leverage the photostability and precise ratiometric measurement capabilities of UCNPs, emphasizing their versatility in non-invasive diagnostics and biological research. Despite challenges in optimizing sensitivity and stability, these approaches reveal the significant potential of UCNPs in advancing medical science, suggesting avenues for future research to enhance sensor performance and expand their applications.
