This thesis explores the frontier of self-powered devices by focusing on the optimization of Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENGs) using plastic materials. Motivated by entrepreneurial ambitions and a vision to invigorate the small energy sector, this research aims to demonstrate the untapped potential of plastics as sustainable resources for energy harvesting. This thesis presents a significant advancement in TENG technology, with a special emphasis on the utilization of 3D printing plastic materials, PETG and PLA+, for energy harvesting applications. The research fills a critical gap in the scientific literature by exploring the electron affinities of these materials, revealing that PETG exhibits a higher electron affinity than PLA+, as evidenced by its superior voltage potential. This pivotal discovery informs TENG designers about the potential of 3D printed materials, thereby influencing the broader field of energy harvesting. Moreover, the thesis introduces an innovative test fixture and the novel TENG3 model, marking a substantial contribution to TENG evaluation methods and TENG technology itself. The fixture not only enhances the robustness and reproducibility of TENG testing but also promotes open-source development, fostering collaboration and transparency within the scientific community. The industry is expected to benefit from this approach, gaining confidence in TENG technologies and encouraging further exploration. The TENG3 model sets a precedent for future innovations in self-powered technologies, paving the way for sustainable energy solutions.
