This work addresses research questions at the nexus of freshwater inputs, shifting phytoplankton communities, food webs, and harmful algal blooms. Chapter 1 investigates phytoplankton dynamics in Louisiana estuaries and provides a multi-system and multi-year perspective, allowing insights into regional and estuary-specific trends that can serve as baselines for future change and impacts. Meta-analysis revealed distinct drivers for phytoplankton biomass and community composition with salinity explaining variation in biomass, and discharge driving assemblage structure. Results also revealed a dominance of cyanobacteria in three study systems suggesting a need to monitor for these potentially harmful species moving forward.Chapter 2 investigates how the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica), feeds on a potentially harmful cyanobacteria species, Microcystis aeruginosa. Through quantification of oyster clearance rates, pseudofeces production and pseudofeces composition, results revealed mixed outcomes for oyster cyanobacteria interactions. Simple biagal experiments suggest that oysters will consume Microcystis raising concerns for long-term oyster fitness and toxin accumulation in oyster tissue. However, results from the more complex experiments using a natural phytoplankton community provide evidence that oysters may reject Microcystis as pseudofeces, potentially concentrating this harmful species in estuarine waters.Chapter 3 probes potential links between dissolved zinc concentrations contained in freshwater inputs and the growth and toxin production of Microcystis aeruginosa. Experiments using a toxigenic and non-toxic strain of M. aeruginosa revealed that zinc concentrations ≥ 0.08 mg L-1 inhibited growth, providing potential thresholds for controlling HABs or a concentration where toxins will be transferred into the dissolved phase if a pulse of Zn laden freshwater encounters an established bloom. Additionally, under intermediate zinc stress, the toxic strain showed a clear advantage over the nontoxic strain, as well as an increase in toxin cell quotas. This research lends support for an ecological role for the toxin microcystin involving resistance to zinc stress and suggests that dissolved zinc concentrations in freshwater inputs may select for toxigenic strains with higher toxin content. This dissertation research makes important connections between understanding what may drive emergence of cyanobacteria in changing estuarine environments, how valuable consumers may respond to changing phytoplankton communities, and resilience links between toxic blooms and metal pollution.
