Marine biofouling has been a constant problem, both economically and environmentally, since mankind started sailing. Biofouling buildup causes increased drag and reduced maneuverability, negatively affecting fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and the cost of maintenance. Two common coating technologies are used to prevent biofouling: anti-fouling coatings (AF) and fouling-release (FR) coatings. The former typically contains biocides to prevent organisms from attaching, while the latter is more environmentally friendly and weakens the adhesion of the organism for easy removal by hydrodynamic pressure. However, traditional FR coatings based on elastomers suffer from weak adhesion to the substrate, limiting their use.The development of hybrid FR systems, such as siloxane polyurethane (SiPU) and urea-alkoxysilanes, aims to improve the toughness of the coating. These systems modify the surface to produce favorable FR properties, while the bulk of the coating provides toughness and good adhesion to the substrate. Several non-reactive polymers/additives can be incorporated into the coating to self-stratify the surface. Amphiphilic polymers that contain PDMS as the hydrophobic component and hydrophilic materials like PEG, zwitterions, or polyglycerol can be incorporated to weaken biofouling adhesion. The studies in this dissertation were conducted to investigate three goals: 1) Investigate the toughness of coatings and how they are affected by regular cleaning; 2) Conduct a detailed examination of amphiphilic content and its effect on FR properties; 3) Introduce novel amphiphilic polymers to tune fouling-release properties. The first goal involves a field test and characterizing the coatings before and after cleaning to determine the impact. The second goal involves a more fundamental study by varying the hydrophobic and hydrophilic content and determining the detailed impact. The last goal involves the incorporation of novel amphiphilic polymers based on different zwitterions and hyperbranched polyglycerol. Overall, the toughness and fouling-release properties were improved by incorporating amphiphilic polymers into a hybrid FR system.
