Most individuals are not inherently adept at public speaking. When faced with the situation, they grapple with fear and anxiety. In response to exercise (planned, structured physical activity), adaptations occur which promote a blunted stress response when the same physiological stressors are subsequently experienced. The purpose of this convenience, cross-sectional study was to a) determine if there was a relationship between heart rate (HR) reactivity induced by these two unique stressors and b) determine if the HR response induced by public speaking can be reduced by offering a unique, multidisciplinary intervention. The initial phase involved researchers attending and describing the study to two, pre-selected public speaking classes taught by the same professor. Informed consent, demographic, anthropometric, and physical activity data were collected. At four distinct timepoints, across the eight-week study, participants were fitted with a HR monitor, and HR was collected during speech giving. Nineteen participants enrolled (7 females; 12 males). The mean Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety was 110.1 ± 22.8. Class 1 received a unique, multidisciplinary intervention from professors in Kinesiology and Psychological Science. Determining the relationship between HR reactivity was thwarted by a failure of several individuals to attend the session and the effort input by several who did engage. The impact of the unique, multidisciplinary intervention showed some promise, as a drop in HR of 5 or more beats per minute was seen in 7 of 12 timepoints during the speech (albeit nonsignificant). There may be value in exploring multidisciplinary interventions for public speaking.
