This doctoral project focuses on holistic spiritual care in the hospice community. For this project, the hospice community includes the patients in hospice care, their families, and the Interdisciplinary team (IDT) who brings care to them. This relationship of patient, family, and caregivers is symbiotic, involving complete interaction to form one inseparably linked community of care, integration that is essential for delivering exceptional care to the terminally ill and dying. To diminish the importance of any one or the totality of these three groups reduces the entire community. This project introduces the reader to a perspective that will expand their heart with the significance of the hospice community as patients face death. The nature of modern-day hospice enlarges the hospice vocabulary and language. I use the language of pastoral care; however, one need not be a pastor to provide hospice care. The term, however, speaks to a quality of personalized care of others that is unmatched in its focus and passion. Spiritual care and pastoral care are synonymous with having the heart of a shepherd in the support of another. Anyone can provide this care. What I refer to as "spiritus" aids such care. This Latin word means the life breath of a living being or creature and, as I use it, includes spiritual as well as physical, emotional, and relational dynamics for one's well-being. It speaks to the life breath of pastoral care in the hospice community.I write as a Christian; however, spiritus-inspired care can come from anyone. Although I believe that God can aid us in hospice care, people have their own spirit that can assist them powerfully while processing the trauma of end-of-life experiences. This paper promotes spiritus as both a human spirit and the human art of caring for others. Spiritus can also be helped by the healing grace of God available to all. The word pastor means shepherd, advocate, protector, and trusted counselor who cares deeply for those they serve. Shepherds nurture their community, leading them to grace and restoration. The 23rd Psalm, exemplifies such work. This project investigates what pastoral care is in the hospice community, why it is essential, and how it can enhance the overall quality of hospice care. Spiritual care and pastoral care interchangeably speak to a quality of hospice care that reflects the immense value of human life. The term pastoral care in this work is limited to a faith context but speaks to a vibrant spiritual care that anyone can engage in if their heart is responsive to their environment. This project explores the formative history of the modern-day hospice movement and how pastoral care became essential. Having worked as a full-time hospice caregiver for several years, I share my varied experiences and numerous conversations with coworkers, bereaved clients, and friends. These scenarios are anecdotal and not for qualitative or quantitative purposes. This component helped me understand the current hospice conversation as a hospice chaplain and bereavement counselor. Therefore, this project uses textual and theoretical research methods, including Scripture, recent scholarly articles, books, interviews, and other resources closely related to the topic of this project. All Bible quotations are from the New Living Translation Bible, unless otherwise noted.
