The purpose of this quantitative predictive correlational study is to determine if and to what extent Burnout and compassion fatigue relate to the early-career nurses' organizational commitment in an acute care facility in the Southwestern United States. The study was guided by multiple models and theories related to early career nurses and the variables of Burnout, Secondary Traumatic Stress, a component of compassion fatigue, and the organizational commitment subscales. The Professional Quality of Life Scale V-5 (ProQOL) was used to evaluate Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress. The Meyer and Allen Organizational Commitment Questionnaire measures levels of organizational commitment broken up into three subscales (Affective, Continuance, and Normative). The sample consisted of nurses with five years or less of experience working at two inpatient facilities within the same organization. The data collection was anonymous and occurred over three weeks with a final N = 118. Assumptions were tested per hypothesis for each organizational commitment subscale, and each assumption was met. Simple linear regression analysis was used to address the RQ and hypotheses. Statistical relationships were found between Burnout and all three organizational commitment subscales, showing that BO does predict these subscales in the sample. Secondary Traumatic Stress was also found to predict the Affective Commitment of the sample but did not predict the Continuance and Normative Commitment of the sample. This site can take this information as a foundation for the creation of interventions to address levels of Burnout in the sample to retain these nurses and reduce turnover.
