Bone-anchored hearing implants (BAHI) are surgically placed hearing devices that rely on bone conduction to treat patients with hearing loss. Implant and device models are rapidly evolving since their invention in the 70s, with the most recent model the Osia® system constructed using piezoelectric materials and conferring many advantages. BAHI has rehabilitated many hearing-impaired individuals with an exceedingly high success rate. Despite its success, there are still patients who refused the implantation surgery, despite being good audiological candidates during a pre-surgical headband trial. The voice of these BAHI non-users is largely missing in the literature as the current patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) existing in the field are not good at collecting this type of information. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the Osia® model has never been systematically assessed. This thesis addresses these gaps by piloting a newly developed hearing-loss-specific PROM survey using a mixed method analytical approach, and by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis about the Osia®.The pilot experiment showed that the process of administering the survey was efficient and feasible. BAHI non-users reported negative outcomes from the headband trial and these outcomes, along with some negative emotions, prevented the best trial experiences. However, there were still some benefits perceived from the trial, collectively reflecting many different patient-values and a multi-factorial decision-making process while considering implantation.Meanwhile, the systematic review and meta-analysis revealed the effectiveness of the Osia® in many dimensions: its implantation is safe, its operative techniques are advancing, and it provided a functional gain of 36.82 dB for patients with conductive and mixed hearing loss, which was the largest functional gain among all active transcutaneous BAHIs. The improvement scores of speech recognition and patient-reported outcome questionnaires with Osia® were all clinically relevant.
