This dissertation explores the psychological impacts and experiences of nurses with death and dying while providing end-of-life care. The study utilizes a qualitative research methods, such as interviews with nurses from palliative care units, hospice care units, and skilled nursing facilities in Oregon and California. The findings reveal a multifaceted impact on nurses' emotional well-being, highlighting the critical role of job satisfaction, coping mechanisms, and the emotional distress exacerbated by the pandemic. Key themes include the lack of formal emotional support within the workplace, the reliance on effective and maladaptive coping strategies, and the substantial emotional burden placed on both nurses and patients due to the constraints and challenges brought by COVID-19.The study highlights the necessity of providing comprehensive emotional and psychological support to nurses, emphasizing the value of integrating end-of-life care training into nursing education to equip nurses for the emotional challenges of caring for patients in their final moments. These insights aim to the development of supportive measures and educational programs that enhance the resilience and well-being of nurses, ensuring compassionate and high-quality end-of-life care.
