Hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle (MC) may contribute to differences in post-exercise recovery in females. This study evaluated the impact of the MC (low-hormone phase (LHP) and high-hormone phase (HHP)) from two load-matched high-intensity interval (HIIT) protocols. Data were analyzed for 35 participants to evaluate recovery measured from blood lactate (BL), muscle oxygenation (ΔTSI%, ΔTHb), recovery heart rate (rHR), and carbon dioxide tolerance (CO2T) in healthy females. For blood lactate, there was a significant phase x protocol interaction (p<0.001) with BL higher during HIIT2:1 compared to HIIT1:1 for both phases (LHP: 2.48 ±0.34 mmol/L, p<0.001, HHP: 0.84±0.28 mmol/L, p=0.006). For our oxygenation outcomes, there was no phase x protocol interaction (p>0.05) for all measures. For rHR, there was a significant phase x protocol interaction (p=0.004), with rHR higher in the LHP. HIIT2:1 provided higher rHR values in the HHP, but there were no differences between protocols in the LHP. These data may inform recovery strategies for active females training across their MC and affirm that females can train, and recovery from high intensity exercise in every phase of their MC.
